Fair condition; the two front pages have been torn out; the edges of the paper with extensive small tears curling and losses; the top page with a large crease to the center; light foxing throughout and with stains and smudges; the ink in good condition; the canvas with frayed edges and with stains and wear; the whole within a protective loose book binding/box.

The 'Ann Maria' was a Connecticut whaling vessel which was built in Philadelphia in 1810 and became part of the fleet of whaling vessels in New London in 1822.  Robert B. Smith was the master on two journeys to the South Atlantic, the first being from 1822-1824 where the vessel collected 145 barrels of sperm whale oil, 1919 barrels of baleen whale oil and 7000 pounds of whale bone, and subsequently from 1826-1828 where the vessel collected 63 barrels of sperm whale oil and 2258 barrels of baleen whale oil. The 'Ann Maria' was lost off of St. Paul's in the Indian Ocean being 'run down by a French whaler' in 1842.
