typed letter signed ("Dick Byrd"), 1 page on letterhead of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, Cohasset, Massachusetts, 29 October 1927, to Vincent Astor ("My dear Skipper"). Byrd writes: "It gives me great pleasure to send this little American flag which I carried for you on the Trans-Atlantic flight of the 'America.' When we go to the Antarctic I will carry another flag for you if you wish it." The letter is matted and framed with a miniature 48-star flag of the United States. Together with an autograph letter signed by Byrd ("Dick Byrd"), 1 page on 9 Brimmer Street letterhead, [Boston,] 30 December 1930, to Astor: "Here is the flag I carried for you on our transatlantic flight and across the South Pole." Laid down on mat board and framed. 3 pieces.

Mats of both items browned, particularly that of the first, typed letter, where that browning has transferred to the letter itself.

Richard Byrd was a U.S. Naval officer and explorer. In 1927 he made a transatlantic flight from the United States to France, but lost the Orteig Prize to Charles Lindbergh, who accomplished the flight some five weeks earlier. In 1930 he became the first pilot to reach the South Pole by air. In both of these endeavors, and others as well, Byrd received financial support from Vincent Astor.
