The drawing is laid down on a thin sheet. There is some pale foxing visible mainly in the sky and the foreground, and a small damage in the background trees at the right where the paper has been broken through.

Henry Bonaventure Monnier was a painter, playwright, caricaturist, lithographer and actor. He trained in the workshops of both Anne-Louis Girodet and Antoine-Jean Gros. He was a keen observer of the human character and is well known for his caricatures and satirical figures.
