Condition

The drawing is backed with a thin sheet of card and is in generally good condition, apart from some surface dirt and a few pale brown stains (visible in the catalogue reproduction). There is a tiny paper loss in the upper right edge. The chalk and wash are strong and fresh.

We are grateful to Alastair Laing for proposing the attribution to Robert, and for informing us that an offset of the present drawing was sold at Christie's New York, 10 January 1996, lot 216, as number 15 in the so-called Album Ryaux.  The album contains a group of offsets of drawings by Robert which were either copied or imitated from Boucher's work.
