Description
- Andy Warhol
- Mao (F. & S. II.90-99)
- screenprint
- each sheet c. 915 by 915 mm 36 by 36 in
The complete portfolio, comprising ten screenprints in colors, 1972, each stamped by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board on the verso, marked 'outside the edition' and annotated in pencil sequentially 'A118.122-A127.122', published by Castelli Graphics and Multiples, New York, with the original AWAAB letters, on Beckett High White paper (10 prints)
Condition
The full sheets (apart from F91 which has been trimmed 5 mm at left). In good condition and with fresh colors. There is an occasional soft handling crease, predominantly in the backgrounds and shirts, most sheets with two short handling creases in the black by his ear, all visible in a raking light and not breaking through the printed surface. The versos of 92, 94, and 98 have uneven skinning along the center vertical axis of the sheets, not visible from the recto. 98 is particularly thin at the center and the skinning on this sheet has apparently been stabilized by a conservator.
Additional minor imperfections in the individual sheets are as follows:
90: a diagonal crease across the lower right corner, the verso with pale discoloration at the sheet edges.
91: an occasional crease along the sheet edges and a tiny nick at center top, the verso with two patches of skinning at the upper sheet edge.
92: a narrow surface scrape in his hair at top is visible in a raking light.
93 and 94: no additional imperfections.
95: The sheet is trimmed 5 mm at the left, as noted above, and there are three short tears at the sheet edge at center. The uneven spotting in the green background is a printing imperfection.
96: Two handling creases along the upper sheet edge are breaking through the printed surface slightly, the upper left corner is creased along the sheet edge, the extreme bottom sheet corners have softened.
97: A diagonal crease at the lower right corner, and a few areas of minor surface soiling on the verso.
98: Three handling creases in the collar are breaking through slightly, slight surface scuffing in the blue background is visible in a raking light.
99: A diagonal crease across the upper right hand corner is breaking through slightly.
