Description
- Baron Adolf de Meyer
- 'JOHN BARRYMORE'
- Warm-toned gelatin silver print
large-format warm-toned print, flush-mounted to brown-paper-backed board, affixed at the upper edge to a secondary mount, signed and titled in pencil on the mount, annotation and date in pencil on the reverse, 1918 (cf. Jullian, pl. 19)
Provenance
Originally sold at Sotheby's New York, The Collection of Baron De Meyer, 20 October 1980, Sale 4437M, Lot 111
Condition
This warm-toned print, on matte-surface paper, is in generally very good condition. The edges are slightly worn and there are a few minor chips at the periphery. Upon close examination, small deposits of retouching and inpainting are visible overall.
On the reverse of the brown-paper-backed mount are a number of white paper adhesions, which indicate that this print was formally affixed to another mount. There are no abrasions to the current secondary mount.
The secondary mount is lightly soiled. There is minor wear along the edges and the corners are softly creased. On the reverse of the mount, 'Jack Barrymore' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil.

Catalogue Note
The photograph in this and the previous lot came originally from a now-legendary Sotheby's auction of De Meyer's personal collection of photographs. In 1980, a locked steamer trunk, containing a trove of De Meyer images, had been purchased in a Los Angeles warehouse sale of unclaimed property. The trunk was traced back to De Meyer's late son Ernest, who had deposited in the warehouse photographs, camera equipment, and many of the photographer's personal effects some thirty years before. The Sotheby's sale that followed remains the largest and finest selection of De Meyer's work ever to appear at auction.
