Description

  • W. Eugene Smith
  • SELECTED IMAGES
  • Gelatin silver prints
2 photographs, Saipan and Nurse Midwife from W. Eugene Smith: A Portfolio of Ten Photographs (Roslyn Heights, 1977, an edition of 25), each mounted, signed in ink on the mount, a letterpress portfolio label on the reverse, framed, 1945 and 1951, printed in 1977 (Johnson 2:104 and 16:101) (2)

Condition

These prints are in generally excellent condition. When examined in raking light 'Saipan,' slight silvering is visible, as well as 2 small, faint scratches that do not break the emulsion in the lower portion of the print. There are several very faint, light rust-colored droplet deposits of indeterminate nature on the front of the mount near the upper edge. These do not affect the print. These are plates 5 and 6 from the portfolio. They are 19/25. These images were also used in LIFE, November 5, 1945 and December 31, 1951; Photographs, pp. 81 and 137.
