Catalogue Note

The present image, which Francesca Woodman made in a Boulder cemetery as a teenager, is from a series in which she is nude or partially-clad among the nineteenth-century graves.  Corey Keller has written, 'At times her body dissolves into a ghostly blur of motion; at others she presses parts of her body into the decorative openings of the tombstones, contrasting nubile, earthly flesh with rough, cold stone. The exploration of space and architecture, and the simultaneous seductiveness and blankness of the nude body are themes around which her later work revolved' (Francesca Woodman, SFMoMA, p. 172).
