Tirage argentique d'avant 1976 par Gunther Sander. Avec le tampon à sec 'August Sander Köln Lindenthal' en bas à gauche et signé et daté 1976 par Gunther Sander au crayon au verso, et annoté par Gerd Sander. Monté sur carton. Au verso du carton, une étiquette 'August Sander Menschen des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts' avec mention 'Copyright 1986 August Sander Archive' New York et annotations au crayon.

Condition

The print is in excellent condition. With the typical small black border along the edges. With one very light indentation near the upper edge towards the left which is visible only in raking light.

Catalogue Note

Publié dans le volume « Sport » de la fameuse anthologie Hommes du XXe siècle, cette célèbre photographie est l'une des plus typiques et remarquables dans l'œuvre portraitiste d'August Sander. Il existe plusieurs variantes de cette image : en fonction du cadrage, le photographe propose une lecture plus « psychologique » ou plus « picturale » du sujet. La variante présentée ici montre un couple de sportifs très différents en termes de stature, de vêtements, de couleur de cheveux et d'expression du visage. Le cadrage est plus large de façon à ce que le dessin des lignes du plafond et du mur forme un véritable treillage géométrique. L'austérité de l'image ainsi que sa composition simple et rigide de lignes droites et de contrastes marqués donnent à cette image une qualité classique intemporelle.
