Minor, very discreet repairs to tortoiseshell box and lid; some unevenness in lining panels and lid rim where box has evidently been taken apart to facilitate repair; carved wood panel in excellent condition. This medallion has been seen by Dr Arabella Ciffani, curator of the Accorsi foundation in Turin. She has said this piece is by Bonzanigo.

Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo naquit à Asti en 1745 et s'installa à Turin en 1773, où il devint membre de la prestigieuse Pia Società e Sodalizio di San Luca l'année suivante. Pendant vingt ans, il travailla comme sculpteur et ébéniste pour une clientèle importante dont la Cour de Savoie. Il fut nommé sculpteur sur bois du Roi de Savoie, Victor Amadeus III, en 1787, titre qu'il conserva jusqu'à l'invasion française de 1796 et qu'il reprit à la chute de Napoléon en 1815, jusqu'à sa mort en 1820. Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo was born in Asti in 1745 and settled in Turin in 1773, being elected to the prestigious ‘Pia Società e Sodalizio di San Luca’, the following year. He was to work for the next 20 years as a sculptor and cabinet maker whose large workshops supplied the Court of Savoy among other important clients. He was appointed Court wood-carver to Victor Amadeus III, King of Savoy, in 1787, remaining in that position until the French invasion of 1796 and was re-instated in 1815 following the downfall of Napoleon, until his death in 1820. He was justly famed for the breathtaking finesse of his ‘microsculture’ carved in box and other light woods as well as for his more conventional but always beautifully-made furniture.
