le premier à facettes, en quartz fumé, gravé des armoiries des comtes Basilewski, deux autres aux manches en jaspe sanguin ou lapis lazuli, les matrices gravées de son chiffre ou blason, et deux cachets-breloques, aux matrices en calcédoine blanche gravées de monogrammes en alphabet cyrillique et latin, dans l'étui d'origine en cuir marron avec une plaque de cuivre gravée en cyrillique: Basilewski, et estampée Girardet

the first desk seal of faceted smoky quartz, engraved with the Basilewski coat of arms, two with bloodstone or lapis lazuli handles and matrices engraved with cipher and shield, knotted silver-gilt mounts and two matching fob seals with matching mounts and white chalcedony matrices engraved with cyrillic and roman monograms, in original fitted brown leather case, stamped: Girardet

Catalogue Note

Le diplomate russe, Alexander Petrovich Basilewsky (1829-1899), vécut et travailla à Paris, où il constitua une collection extraordinaire d'objets médiévaux, présentée lors de l'Exposition Universelle de 1878, ce qui provoqua une grande ire. En 1884, Basilewsky décida de mettre toute sa collection aux enchères, mais la veille de la vente, sur recommendation de secrétaire d'Etat Alexander Polovstsev, Alexandre III acheta l'intégralité pour 6.000.000 francs. Elle constitue désormais le noyau dur du musée de l'Hermitage

The Russian diplomat, Alexander Petrovich Basilewsky (1829-1899), lived and worked in Paris, where he was able to form an extraordinary collection of medieval works of art which caused a great stir when put on display at the Exposition Universelle of 1878. In 1884 Basilewsky decided to put the collection up for sale but on the eve of the auction, on the advice of State Secretary Alexander Polovstsev,  Alexander III unexpectedly purchased the whole collection for 6.000.000 francs. It now forms the core of the Hermitage Museum's medieval collections.
