Catalogue Note
The arms are those of Fontanelli, marquis of Fubino, originally from Modena. Members of this family had served at the court of the Gonzaga at Mantua in the 17th century. The dedication Nicola Fonta most probably denotes a member of the Fontanelli family. it seems probably that the item had a cover and given the dedication Hoc argentum... this was probably decorated with the bust of Saint Paul Aurélian. This great Breton saint was the son of a rich gallo-roman living in Wales where he studied at the Abbey of Llan Iltut in the diocese of LLandaf. Led by a dream which told him to evangelise across the sea he to set out with servants and twelve disciples .allowing providence to chose his destination. This first proved to be the island of Usshant , off the coast of Brittany where he founded the monastery of Lampaul. Supported by his relation count Withur vassal of the King of France and after many adventures including hurling a dragon into the sea from the Ile de Batz, he became bishop of Leon. He died in 575 having cited the centre of his mission in a place which came to be called St Pol de Leon
