Le magasin de Charles-Raymond Granchez "au Petit Dunkerque", dont l'enseigne était une peinture du port de Dunkerque par Joseph Vernet, fut ouvert en 1767 et offrait tous les produits à la mode de l'époque. D'après les autres boîtes par Charles Le Bastier datant de 1775, la mode de cette année-là était clairement aux fonds émaillés de rouge à bords blancs (voir Seelig, Golddosen des 18. Jahrhunderts aus dem Besitz der Fürsten von Thurn und Taxis, Munich, 2007, no. 17; de Llanos / Grégoire, Musée Cognacq-Jay : Boîtes en or et objets de vertu, Paris, 2011, no. 43 among others). La boîte de la collection Thurn and Taxis est également ornée de panneaux en grisaille de la même main. 

Charles-Raymond Granchez's shop, 'au Petit Dunkerque', which opened in 1767 (with a shop sign painted by Joseph Vernet with the port of Dunkirk) sold the most fashionable goods to the most fashionable people. It is evident from other surviving gold boxes of the same year by Charles le Bastier that the ground colour red within white borders was the mode of 1775 (Seelig, Golddosen des 18. Jahrhunderts aus dem Besitz der Fürsten von Thurn und Taxis, Munich, 2007, no. 17; de Llanos / Grégoire, Musée Cognacq-Jay : Boîtes en or et objets de vertu, Paris, 2011, no. 43 among others). The Thurn and Taxis box is also decorated with a grisaille panel by the same hand.

At the time of the 1984 sale ( which included several other boxes from the Hawkins collection), the box was accompanied by a note, described as 'presumably in the hand of C.H.T. Hawkins', reading 'Oval red enamelled gold chased Louis XVI box. Cost me £140. Bought of E. Joseph Dec^r 1890'.
