In overall good condition. Some minor chips, mainly on one edge angle.
Cavallier was a notary living in Montpellier, place de la Canourgue, nr 3. Father Lacordaire took him in high respect. The text engraved is taken from one of Father Lacordaire's letters to Cavallier.

Catalogue Note
Henri-Dominique Lacordaire, né à Recey sur Ource,en Bourgogne, en 1802 et mort en 1861 à Sorèze, dans le Tarn, restaura en France en 1837 l'Ordre dominicain des Frères Prêcheurs qui avait été supprimé en 1790. Lors de ses prédications passionnées, ce grand orateur clamait des idées de gauche. Il avait été élu à l'Assemblée constituante à Marseille en 1848 pour siéger à l'extrème gauche de l'hémicycle. Il souhaitait convaincre son auditoire que démocratie, libéralisme et catholicisme social étaient compatibles. Il soutint avec ferveur la révolution de 1848. Egalement reconnu pour ses talents de poète et d'écrivain, il fut élu à l'Académie Française en 1860. En 1855, le pape nomme le père Alexandre Jandel, soutenant une interprétation sévère des règles dominicaines et opposant au père Lacordaire, Maître Général de l'Ordre. Le père Lacrodaire s'éloigne de l'administration de la province de France mais est réélu en 1858.
