Catalogue Note

This town mark is reproduced by Marc Rosenberg, Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 1928, Vol. IV, n. 9598. A pair of neoclassical candlesticks, with the same town mark and maker's mark as this stag, dated circa 1800, possibly Görlitz, are recorded by Tina Pandorf, 100 Glanzstücke : europäisches Silber aus 4 Jahrhunderten, Museum August Kestner, 2009, p. 92. It has been elsewhere suggested that the town mark from around 1815 is for Weissenfels in Sachsen-Anhalt, see  Jens Fischer: Geschichte der Weißenfelser Goldschmiede, Selbstverlag 2006 and http://silberpunze.piranho.de/Silber/TEST.php?id=WeissenfelsSachsen_1850_Gustav_Billing.JPGS.
