Description

  • Flemish School, 17th century
  • The Monkey Barber's Shop
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is in good condition, unbeveled and uncradled, and appears to be made up of three horizontal boards. The paint surface overall is in fair condition with some patches of raised aligatoring in the upper section, though it appears stable. Inspection under ultra violet is impeded by a very milky, opaque varnish though reveals inpainting to a crack along both panel joins. There are minor, scattered retouchings throughout the composition, most notably to the cabinets in the background, the monkey beside the window on the left side. The varnish could possibly mask further older restoration. The painting would benefit form a light clean and revarnish and is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
