Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work seems to have been restored fairly recently. The canvas has a recent lining and the paint
layer is stable. Under ultraviolet light, one can see very clearly some fairly significant retouches in the
sky. There are also retouches in the beard of the standing figure and in numerous spots in his red
gown. There are retouches throughout the foliage on the left and also in the figures in the lower left
quadrant. The retouches are reasonable as far as they go, and the lining and the cleaning seem to be adequate. At present, it is the abrasion to the paint layer in the red cloak and in the darker colors which are most noticeable. Although there are pockets of fresh condition, such as in the feet of the standing figure, the work certainly is visibly affected by the abrasion and should be addressed by a restorer.
