The old glue relining is firm and stable. under a dirty and dull old varnish. the paint surface is a bit pressed and there is some thinness noticeable in beard and right side of his scarf, but overall the figure reads well. two very small scuffs can be seen in coat lower right. ultraviolet light reveals retouching over an old scratch or tear on forehead; a tiny retouch can be seen to right of ear. otherwise nothing else fluoresces. painting would benefit from a light clean and fresh varnish. In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with some losses.
