Tuscan School, mid 15th Century

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Both of these panels are on thick pieces of wood and are in uneven condition. The paint layers are more or less stable except for some flaking in the lower right side of the Madonna and in the lower portion of the angel. If the works were to be cleaned, a good deal of retouching would be removed in both pictures, although more so in the angel than the Madonna. This retouching would have to be reapplied or reexamined. However, the quality of the works would certainly improve as well as the rather heavy handed restoration, such as in the cheek of the Madonna and in the background and face of the angel. We think the results of restoration would be well worth the effort.
