Description

  • Jan Weenix
  • A hunting still life with partridges, a duck and other birds with a gun and an opium poppy, in a landscape
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is relined and the paint surface stable with a slight cleavage of approximately 2 inches in the centre of the upper edge and another slightly raised area of approximately 2 inches on the lower left edge. There is some frame abrasion on the upper and lower edges and a minor loss to the top of the stick. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals some areas of inpainting, one upper center, two in the upper right corner and scattered minor retouching in the sky. There are two small repaired holes in the tree, at approximately four and two inches from the left edge and an inpainted damage of approximately 4 inches on the lower right edge and inpaint to a slight raised crack beside the head of the central bird. The painting would benefit from a light clean and revarnish. Offered in a ornately carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The original of this composition by Weenix is not known though the presumed original, signed and dated 170(?), is recorded in a Munich private collection.  It must have been very popular as there are numerous contemporary and later copies extant.
