Description

  • Jan Weenix
  • A hunting still life with an eagle and a woodpecker together with hunting paraphernalia and a red parrot, in a landscape
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting does not appear to have been relined and the canvas remains in very good condition. The paint surface is stable if a little abraded in areas, notably in the mid tones of the eagle's wings and in the blue strap, though this does not affect the reading of the painting. There is what appears to be an overpainted extension of approximately half an inch on all four sides. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals scattered minor retouching throughout, one slightly larger area of restoration in the water, center left, and covered areas of abrasion in the left right hand corner, in the foliage to the left side of the parrot and in the darks between the eagle's wings. The heads of the birds, the parrot and the silver latches are in good condition and retain the clarity of their details. The painting is offered in a carved, gilt wood frame.
