Description

  • Peter Snayers
  • The sack of a village
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Private collection, Milan;
From whom acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The panel is cradled with reinforced brackets and dovetails along the panel join in the upper section on the reverse. There are horizontal lines of blistering in the upper section and some resulting losses exposing the ground, as visible in the catalogue image. There are further small losses to both horses' legs and in the legs of the figures lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouches to the join and addressing the blistering and losses in the sky, some of which are visible to the naked eye. There are further possible retouches to the building on the right side and in the background surrounding the church. The blistering should be attended to though the painting overall in quite good condition and the figures and lower section appear to be largely untouched, retaining their clarity of detail. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
