Condition

Old glue relining is firm and stable. surface has been slightly pressed in the relining process. detail remains very good in the fruit, ceramic bowl, cup and carpet. the glass, the left side of the pewter dish, and ledge are a bit thin. under ultraviolet light: the thick varnish makes it very difficult to read. it appears that there may be some retouching to the right side of the bowl and one small retouch to top part of cup. otherwise, it is impossible to see anything. Catalogue Note

This accomplished still life, previously given to Juriaen van Streek, was listed as attributed to Christiaen Striep by Fred Meijer in 2006 who dated it between 1653 - 1657.1  Little is known of this artist aside from his registration as a citizen of Amsterdam in 1656, suggesting he may have served as an apprentice there.2
