Catalogue Note

This is likely to be a portrait of a French woman in Turkish dress or an actress in her costume, a product of the Parisian taste for the exotic in the late 18th century.  The drawing seems to have been engraved by Thérèse Lignée (born 1753) with the title Validé ou la Sultane mère.1

Augustin de Saint-Aubin was a prolific printmaker himself, but also a highly accomplished portrait draftsman.  This beautiful and refined drawing is characteristic of his best work and can be compared with a portrait of his wife, in the same media, sold London, Christie's, 11 April 2002, lot 636.
