Catalogue Note

This drawing and the following lot are extremely close in style and technique to the work of François Quesnel, who worked as a decorator and designer of cartoons for tapestries but is most famous for his portraits.  He worked at the French court of Catherine de' Medici and her son Henri III.  This portrait has been delicately drawn in black and red chalk with a high degree of finish.  The ruff is rendered in great detail, as is the lady's hair and drop earring, and stumping has been used to create gradations and half tones.  The inscription on the verso may relate to the sitter.
