Catalogue Note

Although there is no concrete evidence that connects this drawing to an existing painting or print, the style is typical of Stradanus's very loose and free sketches.  It also has some very general compositional similarities with both a signed and dated painting of 1586 and with its pendant, Adoration of the Magi, commissioned for the Palazzo della Gherardesca in Florence (see Alessandra Baroni Vannucci, Jan Van Der Straet detto Giovanni Stradano, Milan 1997, p. 169, no. 50).
