Description

  • George Romney
  • A Group of Standing Figures
  • Brown wash over pencil

Provenance

Sir John and Lady Witt,
their sale, London, Sotheby's, 19 February 1987, lot 92, (as Waiting Souls)

Condition

The pigments are clean, clear and strong. There is minor surface dirt overall and evidence of some minor light staining while in a previous mount. There is one very minor fox mark at the sheet edge upper centre. The sheet has not been laid down but is adhered to the present backing sheet at the corners and in places at the sheet edges. This work has been preserved in very good condition.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

When this drawing was last offered at auction in 1987 it was entitled Waiting Souls, however the sheet does not appear to relate to any oil painting by Romney of that subject. From a photograph, Alex Kidson has suggested that the drawing may be an example of Romney's observations of street scenes and may date to the 1770s. The pen and brown ink drawings Three Sketches of Children and Two Woman with Two Children are stylistically comparable with the present work.1 We would like to thank Alex Kidson for his help in cataloguing this work.
