Catalogue Note

Blÿhooft's rather rare drawings of tulips and other flowers (see also the following lot) form part of the great Dutch tradition of botanical drawings, which originates from the very earliest years of the 16th century.  Representations of tulips reached a peak during the great Tulip Mania of circa 1636, and many later images are merely copies of prototypes from this time, but Blÿhooft approached these flowers in a more personal and original way, making delightful, fresh drawings from life.  Another example, also dated 1670, was with B. Houthakker, Amsterdam, in 1973.
