Condition

Laid down. Vellum laid down onto cardboard. The vellum has buckled slightly. The overall condition is good. There are a few small brown stains lower center and a brown mark lower right just above the peasant's boot. Sold in a plain wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

This drawing records Dürer's 1514 woodcut, Bartsch 90 (101).  Wierix in fact made an engraved copy of this print, and his drawing style is close enough to the techinique seen here that the possibility should certainly be considered that this drawing too is by Wierix.

The M-like mark in the lower right of the sheet has previously been interpreted as the collector's mark of Otto Gerstenberg (L.1840c), but this does not seem convincing.
