Catalogue Note

This watercolor was made when Robert was back in Paris and drawing upon his Italian experiences to produce works popular with collectors.  The colonnade at the back is reminiscent of St. Peter's, and the arrangement of figures at a fountain under an arch is found in many other Robert compositions.  A larger watercolor, similar in technique and subject, was sold Paris, Tajan, 28 November 2002, lot 89.
