Catalogue Note

Very typical of the artist's descriptive style, this view is drawn with great accuracy and differentiation between the foreground, finished in pen and ink and abundant wash, and the subtle background, executed solely in black chalk.  The present study does not correspond to any known paintings by Hackert but it is dated in the same year as other views of the area including one of the Gulf of Pozzuoli in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome.1
