Catalogue Note
This comes from an album of drawings by Vernet, assembled at the beginning of 19th Century in Vienna. The album was dispersed at the sale in Versailles in 1966 and many drawings are now in public and private collections in Europe and America. The majority of the album consisted of views of Rome and Naples. It is clear that the coastline and city of Naples made an impact on Vernet as he frequently depicted its rugged beauty in his drawings. Another view of Posillipo by Vernet was sold, London, Sotheby's, 8 July 1998, lot 247
