Catalogue Note

George Knox has proposed that this amusing caricature may represent an ecclesiastic.  It comes from an album of 107 caricatures, bound in gilt calf and titled 'Tomo terzo de caricature'.  The album was broken up at the time of the Christie's sale in 1943 and the contents are now scattered in public and private collections worldwide.  The drawings were almost all by Giambattista, and Knox believes they were mostly works from 1754-62. The album seems to have stayed in the possession of Giandomenico, and often served him as inspiration (see the previous lot).  Knox has suggested, when studying this sheet for a private publication, that it corresponds to no. 7 of the 'Tomo terzo de caricature'.
