Description

  • George Morland
  • A woodland landscape with gypsies encamped below a tree
  • signed lower right, on a rock: G. Morland.
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

With John and William Vokins, London, circa 1894-1910;
Probably acquired by Sir John Gladstone, 3rd Bt. (1852-1926), and thence by descent in the Gladstone family at Fasque House, Aberdeenshire.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative, though a little lighter in tone. The painting appears to be in good condition, with no apparent damage or loss of paint. It has a firm lining, and the apint is slightly flat as a result, however the canvas weave cannot be seen . Examination under ultraviolet light reveals minor infilling to craquelure and retouching overall, predominantly in the background. The painting is held in a neo-classical style frame, in good overall condition.
