Condition
This panel is flat and has been cradled on the reverse. The paint surface is stable and in good state. There are a few small, hairline cracks that run horizontally: from the left edge there is one crack about an inch from the top edge that is only about an inch in length. At left center and at lower left, there are two longer cracks that extend into the center of the panel. At the right edge, there are two cracks in the upper quadrant that also extend horizontally towards the center of the panel. These cracks are not distracting and they have been well and carefully filled and restored. Under UV, there are a number of small, isolated retouches to the sky. These have slightly discolored and could be readdressed, although they are not distracting in their current state. There is also infill and retouching to the horizontal cracks. In very good condition and can be hung as is. In a simple gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note
Valenciennes’ style was deeply influenced by his numerous trips to Italy. He and his circle specialized in landscapes executed en plein air such as the present work.
