Relined. the paint surface is very well preserved overall with particularly nice detail in the foreground and figures. it is painted on a canvas with a heavy weave and the pattern is a bit noticeable in the sky, but is not too distracting. some old fills can be seen in sky and a scratch in trees at far left side. under UV: there are a series of horizontal, repaired tears in sky, with one larger one that goes through foliage of trees at center. also some retouching around edges, with a larger areas of retouching at left center edge, and one small area in water. the landscape for the most part looks good. this painting could be hung in it present state, though many of these old repairs could be done better. Catalogue Note

Miel was part of the generation of Dutch artists known as the bamboccianti who moved to Rome in the first half of the 17th century and specialised in depicting beggars and simple craftspeople, usually shown either at rest or making merry after a few drinks. Their style went against the classicizing ideals that were prevalent in Rome at the time but their interest in everyday life has always struck a chord with collectors.
The landscape is most likely by another hand.
