Description

  • Cornelis Pietersz. Bega
  • A merry company in a tavern
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting is warmer and the colours fresher than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined and as a result the darker pigments have sunk slightly into the canvas. The paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye. In a raking light there is evidence of retouching predominatly to strengthen the outlines of the objects in the background. Examination under ultrviolet reveals, in addition to that already mentioned, further scattered cosmetic retouchings all over particularly in the background and to the seated lady's dress. The retouching appears to be cosmetic instead of structural thought. Offered in a black and gold wood frame in good condition.
