Description

  • Johannes Bouman
  • A still life of pears in a bowl and scattered gooseberries, cherries, peas, strawberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants and hazelnuts on a stone ledge with a chained monkey
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Monaco, Sotheby's, 22 June 1985, lot 45.

Condition

The painting is richer and warmer than the catalogue illustration suggests. The chamfered single panel is flat however there is evidence of an old horizontal split along the grain running through the monkey's leg and the rim of the fruitbowl which has been reinforced on the reverse with a baton. The paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage visible to the naked eye apart from the aforementioned split. There is old cosmetic retouching visible throughout the background as can be seen in the catalogue and there is a slightly pronounced horizontal ridge running the length of the panel through the monkey's head and through the topmost pear however this seems to be natural and is only visible under a raking light. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals extensive cosmetic retouching throughout the background and strengthening to the monkey and to a lesser extent the central fruit bowl. There is also retouching along the aforementioned split. Offered in a plain wood and black painted frame in good condition.
