  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has quite a tight relining, possibly from the mid-20th century, which has flattened the paint surface somewhat. The canvas otherwise appears structurally sound but the paint surface has suffered, predominantly in the upper part of the painting, where the leaves of the tree are abraded. With the naked eye discoloured old retouchings can be made out in the craquelure in the sky and, for example, along the arch of the bridge. The lower half is in better condition and the artist's typical higlights on the vegetation are still very much in evidence. Inspection under UV light is hindered by the glossy varnish but the condition of the work can be nonetheless understood with the naked eye. Offered in a later painted black wooden frame with some losses.
