Condition

Male Portrait The catalogue illustration is representative. The painting appears to be in good country house condition, with no apparent damage or loss of paint.. There is an old , very discoloured varnish overall, with splashes of white residue in the lower section of the picture and some pencil marks in the sitter's hand, all of which are on top of the varnish. There is a scratch in the varnish, approx. 4 in. long horizontally, in his hair and further scattered flecks of dirt on top of the varnish overall. The painting has been lined, and the paint surface is slightly flat as a result, although the canvas weave cannot be seen. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a very small amount of minor scattered old retouching, and shows no signs of structural damage. Female Portrait The catalogue illustration is representative. The picture is in good condition, with no apparent extant damage or loss of paint. There is some visible old infilling to craquelure, particularly upper left, and further pronounced craquelure in the lower centre. There are some scuffs to the canvas edges, and a small area of old retouching in the background, above the sitter's head. The painting has a firm lining and the surface of the paint is slightly flat and mildly abraded in places. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor retouching, predominantly in the background. There is also some to one area in the hair, and to a small number of scattered areas of the dress. Both held in matching carved and gilded British Baroque wooden frames.
