Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 30 June 2005, lot 70;
With Phillip Mould, Historical Portraits, London, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The picture is lighter than the catalogue illustration suggests. It appears to be in very good condition, with no visible damage or loss of paint. The canvas has been lined but without compromising the surface of the paint, and there is still very good impasto in the white highlights if the sitters waistcoat. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a very small number of extremely minor retouchings to minor craquelure in the background, lower left, but otherwise the picture appears to be in excellent untouched state. The painting is held in a carved and gilded wooden frame, in good overall condition.
