Condition
The canvas is relined and the relining is stable.
There is restoration along each extremem margin, probably the result of frame abrasion. The paint surface is even and well preserved and has been relatively recently cleaned. There is some strengthening to the blues of the sky. There are some small retouchings through the landscape, such as to the base of the lion fountain.
Sold with a modern gilt frame, in good condition.

Catalogue Note
At the time of the 1995 sale Joseph Baillio endorsed the attribution to Robert and suggested a date of execution of circa 1755-76, shortly after the artist's arrival in Italy. The painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist to be published by the Wildenstein Institute.
