Condition

1. The canvas has been sympathetically lined and, considering its size, the painting is in good condition overall. There are few small restored damages and some scattered retouchings throughout though the painting requires little or no further attention. 2. There are more resotred damages to this canvas and some larger restorations in the sky. There is a group of small restored damages along the lower margin. The paintings have both been recently restored and cleaned to a good standard and are ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

The composition of the former comes close to a drawing that was given to Fernando Galli Bibiena when with William H. Schab in New York (fig. 1) and a sheet sold London, Christie's, 4 July 1995, lot 63, seems to have served as a preparatory drawing for the latter (fig. 2).
The figures, almost certainly by a different hand, seem to be by an Austrian artist active in the first half of the 18th century and do not feature in the aforementioned drawings.
