Provenance

Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Gentleman"), Sotheby's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 219, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The original is brighter and more colourful than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has an old, stable lining. The paint surface is in good overall condition though with some localised arwas of pronounced craquelure. There is a diagonal tear to the right of the globe. Inspection under ultra-violet light is made difficult by the reflective varnish layer but does reveal some infilling of craquelure. Sold with a carved and gilt wood frame, with several losses.

Catalogue Note

The artist, who specialised in closely-observed still lifes, trained with his uncle, the painter Etienne Jeaurat, but was also heavily influenced by Chardin. He was received into the Academy in 1756, enjoyed notable success at the Paris Salon, and was appointed peintre de la reine to Louis XV’s consort, Queen Marie Leczinska.
