Description
- Jacob van der Kerchoven, called Giacomo da Castello
- A still life of ducks, turkeys, melons, figs, grapes and a cabbage on a stone ledge
- oil on canvas
Condition
The painting is brighter and slightly more contrasted than it appears in the catalogue illustration. The canvas is relined and the lining still holds well. The paint surface appears to have been cleaned not so long ago and the varnish is only slightly opaque. The paint was solidly applied and the artist's characteristically textural and detailed brushwork is well preserved on the whole. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals considerable localised strengthening to shadows on the turkeys, cabbage and figs lower centre. The highlights on the grapes centre left have also been gone over, though this is not at all visible to the naked eye. Further strengthenings and retouchings are localised in the background. Many of these retouchings appear to be cosmetic and do not conceal significant damages or losses. The painting could be hung as is, though it may benefit from a new varnish.
The later Bolognese-style gilt wood frame is in good condition.
