Condition

The colours in the catalogue illustration are quite faithful to the painting although the tones are slightly less contrasted in the original. The canvas has a relatively old relining and still holds well, although the original canvas appears to be coming off its relining canvas in two areas along the lower edge (apparently where the frame may have rubbed the surface in the past). A number of blooms appear to have been partially cleaned and the varnish has been unevenly applied (or partially removed in places). Generally, the flower details are well preserved and the darker areas are only a little sunk. The painting will benefit from an overall clean and systematic removal of the varnish. Inspection under ultra-violet light is impeded by the uneven varnish which fluoresces in a number of places. There do not appear to be any significant damages or repairs, and the painting is in good condition overall. The later Empire-style gilt wood frame has some superficial knocks and damages but is generally sound.
