Catalogue Note

The view shows the Campidoglio, or Capitoline Hill, one of the celebrated seven hills of Rome. Originally the citadel of the earliest Romans, the present configuration of the piazza was designed by Michelangelo between 1536-46 and commissioned by Pope Paul III to re-establish the glory of Rome.
