Condition

The canvas has an old, effective relining. The paint surface is secure and in good condition under a somewhat yellowed, glossy varnish. A few very minor scattered retouchings and strengthenings are visible under UV light. Offered in a wooden frame with a gilt surround in good condition.

Beerstraten’s winter landscapes are amongst his most atmospheric compositions.  Here he fuses his interest in topography, seen in the background view of Amsterdam, with his exploration of the glowering skies and the frozen light of the Dutch winter.
