Catalogue Note

The Munttoren (Mint Tower) in Amsterdam stands in the Muntplein square and marks the point where the Singel canal meets the Amstel river.  The name derives from 1672 when the Dutch Republic was at war with both France and England and coins could no longer be safely minted in Dordrecht or Enkhuizen, so the tower acted as a temporary mint for the city.
