Condition
The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is secure and in good condition under and even varnish. Some old strengthenings are visible to the naked eye in the leaf and stalks centre left and to the bunch of grapes and shadows centre right. This is confirmed under UV light which also reveals some strengthening to the other stalks in the composition and in the darker areas of the lower half. Offered in a stained wooden frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Jan Mortel was a native of Leiden, and spent his entire career there. His still lifes are characteristically lavish, and his compositions are far from being sparse, often, as here, mixing fish, fruit and vegetables.
